Luke 8.0

Stayed here for work and found the hotel to be lovely and homely. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and helpful around late check in. The breakfast was great too.

Sawaros 8.0

I like the location of this hotel which is near the train station, even though the railway bridge on Botley Road is closed during our visit in January 2026 (it will be closed to vehicle access until August 2026). This probably made the area around the hotel much quieter. There is a lounge/ bar for anyone to sit in and enjoy the drinks (with extra charges, paid when checking out). The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious. We enjoyed a 1-night stay here.

Lots of choice for breakfast that was suitable for vegan diets. Staff friendly with lots of local knowledge and suggestions - especially places to head for when the weather wasn’t great. Also gave me an upgrade so great value for money.

About This Hotel

River Hotel sits along Botley Road in Oxford, a small and intimate property that feels tucked away yet remarkably well connected to the city’s highlights. With just 16 rooms, the hotel offers a personal, relaxed atmosphere that suits visitors who value a quiet base from which to explore. The setting beside the river and among green spaces provides a refreshing counterpoint to a busy sightseeing day, making it ideal for travelers seeking a calm retreat after a day of museum visits and college tours. Location and surroundings are a real asset here. The hotel is about 2.2 km from the University of Oxford, placing you within easy reach of the campus bustle while still enjoying a peaceful neighbourhood feel. Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology is less than a kilometer away, making it simple to combine culture with a riverside stroll. The area around River Hotel is characterized by a mix of river views and garden greenery, which guests often enjoy from room windows or during a tranquil morning in the lobby lounge. The building’s proximity to central sights is balanced by a slower pace at the doorstep, allowing you to unwind without feeling isolated from the city around you. Rooms and comfort are a strong point. With 16 guest rooms, the property maintains a personable, approachable vibe that larger hotels struggle to match. The guest rooms are depicted in photos as well appointed and comfortable, with a focus on restful bedding and practical layouts. Expect features such as in room coffee and tea facilities and reliable WiFi, with the option of choosing rooms that offer garden or river views. The overall décor reads as warm and inviting, supporting a good night’s sleep after a day spent exploring university libraries, historic chapels, and local markets. While the hotel does not advertise extensive wellness facilities, the calm environment and scenic outlooks contribute to a sense of relaxation that many guests seek on short breaks or extended weekend stays. Food and drink play a supportive role in your Oxford visit. Breakfast options include a buffet style offering and English or Irish breakfast choices, giving you a hearty start before a day of city discoveries. In addition to breakfast, the property features a lounge area where guests can enjoy light refreshments, coffee, tea and a curated range of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. The presence of a dedicated dining area nearby is complemented by the on site ambience, making quiet mornings and leisurely evenings possible without venturing far for a meal. This arrangement appeals to travelers who appreciate simple, well prepared options and a convivial space to gather with family or colleagues before heading out again. Family friendliness and activities are clearly addressed in the hotel policies and amenities. Children of any age are welcome, and the property accommodates guests within a maximum occupancy, which can be helpful for families planning a compact city break. There is a practical approach to cots and extra beds, with the note that all cots and extra beds are subject to availability and that there is a specific cot policy in place. For families needing extra comfort, a cot may be arranged with a small charge when available. It is important to note that the maximum number of guests is 3, so this is a good option for small families or groups who value a more intimate setting over larger multi room configurations. Relaxation, wellness and entertainment around River Hotel come from the surroundings as much as any on site facilities. The river and garden views provide a soothing backdrop that enhances relaxation after a day of sightseeing. The location is well suited to walkers and cultural explorers who want to combine outdoor time with easy access to Oxford’s academic and cultural institutions. Guests who enjoy a quiet drink in a lounge, or a relaxed breakfast in a dining area, will find the balance of comfort and convenience appealing. Entertainment options largely come from the local area, with museums, libraries and study spaces within short reach, and the hotel itself offers a comfortable, low key retreat that supports a well earned break from a busy itinerary. Who this hotel is ideal for will depend on your priorities for a city break. If you value a boutique feel, a small number of rooms, and a setting that bridges river views with convenient city access, River Hotel fits the bill beautifully. It is particularly suitable for couples and small families who want a peaceful base near Oxford’s top sights, while still enjoying close proximity to university campuses and historic landmarks. The lodging is also well suited to travelers seeking straightforward, transparent policies and a friendly, human touch from staff, with clear guidance on parking, WiFi access, and check in and check out times. The on site parking option, though not always necessary given the city location, adds extra flexibility for guests with a car, while the absence of pets and the explicit age restriction for check in create a consistent, predictable stay for those who plan ahead. In short, River Hotel offers a calm riverside ambience in a central Oxford location. It combines practical essentials with intimate service, thoughtful room choices, and clear, guest friendly policies. For travelers who want to combine educational excursions with leisurely moments by water or in green spaces, this hotel represents a reliable, comfortable home base from which to experience Oxford at a relaxed pace.
