Large bedrooms with well equipped bathroom. Plenty of hot water. Big choice of breakfast using local quality ingredients.

Brian 10.0

Beautiful hotel, very tasty breakfast, very clean and comfortable room with good shower pressure. Well within walking distance of the main attractions. The hosts were really nice, as were their cats. There was parking available both at the hotel and on the road in front of the building. Will stay there again.

Debbie 10.0

Sophie and Alec welcomed us like friends. The property had a spacious bedroom with smart TV and bathroom with ample showering products. There was lots of choice for breakfast using local quality ingredients. There’s a short walk into the town and harbour making The Shirley an ideal place for exploring Torquay. Both Alec and Sophie made us feel welcome. There’s a lovely outdoor area although in December we didn’t use it. One real plus breakfast was served 08:45 - 09:45 which is a bonus not having to rise too early. Earlier breakfast was available on request

Excellent location, but as it is on high ground would not suit guests with mobility issues.

What a lovely warm welcome. The Shirley was a great find and the room was exactly as we expected. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary during our stay and they decorated our room with balloons and banners. Such a lovely gesture.

About This Hotel

The Shirley sits on Braddons Hill Road East in a quiet corner, a small four star family run guest house that still preserves many original Victorian period features. With only six rooms, the place feels intimate rather than commercial, and the personal touch from the owners is evident from arrival. The property is ideally placed for guests who want easy access to the water without sacrificing a peaceful, neighborhood feel. It takes just a five minute walk to reach the marina area, where you can stroll along the quayside, admire boats, and plan day trips with minimal hassle. The family atmosphere is evident from the moment you arrive, and guests often remark on the warm welcome that starts at check in. Close to the coast and with a maritime atmosphere, The Shirley offers a relaxed base for sun seekers and explorers alike. The surrounding streets are lined with eateries and charming spots, while the proximity to the marina makes boat spotting and waterfront walks a daily pleasure. Some photos in the listing highlight sea views and seating areas that hint at a tranquil welcome after each day of coastal adventures. The setting is designed for guests who want to feel anchored in a seaside town while staying comfortably connected to the rest of the region. Inside, six guest rooms balance period charm with modern comfort. The building retains many original Victorian features, creating character that guests notice the moment they step inside. Room layouts are shown in the photos, including spaces configured as cozy bedrooms with seating areas and wardrobes, offering practical storage and a feeling of home away from home. A sense of careful upkeep runs through the property, ensuring that linens feel fresh, amenities are reliable, and every stay is quietly comfortable. Some rooms also offer sea views, adding a special touch for couples or guests who simply want to wake up to the sounds of the coast. Dining at The Shirley centers on the on site options visible in the property photos. Guests can enjoy meals in the on site restaurant or unwind in the lounge or bar after a day by the water. The overall dining atmosphere appears warm and unfussy, designed for relaxed evenings with family or friends. While the listing does not claim extensive facilities, the available food and beverage spaces provide a convenient focal point for informal evenings and light meals, complementing days spent exploring the marina and local beaches. The flexible layout means groups of friends or families can gather without fuss. Family is at the heart of The Shirley. As a family run guest house, it offers a welcoming and personable experience that suits travelers who value warmth and attentiveness. The property accommodates up to four guests per room, and policies state that there is no capacity for extra beds or cots. Children older than seven are welcome, making this a sensible option for families with older kids who want to stay together without the crowds of larger resorts. With six rooms in total, the house feels manageable and easy to move around, ideal for a relaxed, homey break close to the marina. Even with its compact footprint, the property supports a satisfying lifestyle of relaxation and light entertainment. Guests can unwind in a calm, intimate lounge or bar, or simply enjoy a quiet read by a window that frames the sea views that some rooms offer. The sea breeze, the quiet streets, and the proximity to the marina combine to create a soothing atmosphere after day trips or long walks along the coast. Free on site parking adds convenience for travelers who arrive by car, while free wifi keeps you connected for planning days out or sharing photos of the trip. Who is The Shirley best suited for? It is an excellent choice for couples seeking a peaceful seaside escape and for families with children aged seven and older who want a cozy, character filled base near the waterfront. The intimate layout, preserved Victorian charm, and attentive family service make it appealing to visitors who value authentic lodging over cookie cutter hotels. The location offers easy access to the marina and nearby beaches, while the on site dining options and friendly atmosphere provide all you need for a relaxed, memorable stay in a small, welcoming house by the sea.
