Turkey’s Mediterranean coast is best known for its big resorts. Yet on the Lycian coast between Antalya and Fethiye there are villages and coves reached only by boat or narrow paths, still largely undiscovered by the crowds. This guide picks ten hidden gems in Turkey’s Mediterranean, with when to go, how to get there and which base makes the most sense.

1. Kaleköy and Kekova

East of Kaş, Kaleköy (ancient Simena) can only be reached by boat or on foot. The Byzantine castle on the hill, Lycian tombs rising out of the water and the sunken city ruins off Kekova Island make the area unique. Boat trips from Kaş or Üçağız combine the sights with swimming stops, and paddling a kayak in the calm early morning is an experience of its own.

2. Adrasan

Adrasan, near Kumluca, is a long pine-fringed bay and a quiet seaside village. There are no big hotels; small guesthouses and restaurants by the stream set the pace. A boat trip from here to the turquoise waters of Suluada is one of the finest day trips in the region.

3. Olympos

Hidden among fig and bay trees in a valley, the ruins of ancient Olympos stretch along a stream. Walking through the ruins straight onto the beach is what makes it special. Olympos’s treehouse stays have long been a backpacker favourite; for more comfort, walk a few minutes along the beach to Çıralı.

4. Çıralı

Çıralı is known for its protected loggerhead turtle nesting beach, orange groves and bungalows. Small places such as Yedi Butik Hotel and Şehri Bungalov Çıralı reflect the village’s gentle spirit. Do not miss the short evening walk up to Yanartaş, where flames burn endlessly from the rocks.

5. Kabak Bay

South of Fethiye, at the end of a steep valley, Kabak is known for tented camps and small eco-style properties. The road down to the bay is steep; some properties offer a transfer or luggage service. One of the most beautiful sections of the Lycian Way passes through.

6. Faralya and Butterfly Valley

The village of Faralya sits on the clifftop right above Butterfly Valley. The valley is easiest to reach by boat from Ölüdeniz; the path down from the village is for experienced walkers only. At sunset, the terraces of the village guesthouses offer one of the most dramatic views on the Mediterranean.

7. Patara

With around twelve kilometres of sand, dunes and the assembly building of the Lycian League, Patara is one of Turkey’s longest and most natural beaches. The beach is protected, so there are no buildings on it. Stay in a small guesthouse in Gelemiş village or come for the day from nearby Kalkan.

8. Kayaköy

Between Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy is a ghost village of hundreds of stone houses left empty after the 1923 population exchange. Wandering the hillside early in the morning or at sunset is deeply atmospheric. Walking paths lead from the village to Ölüdeniz and the Afkule Monastery.

9. Saklıkent Gorge

East of Fethiye, Saklıkent is a narrow, high-walled canyon with ice-cold water running through it. It is one of the best ways to cool down in the summer heat; bring water shoes. The ancient city of Tlos nearby can be visited the same day.

10. Dalyan

Dalyan is a calm town at the western end of the Lycian coast, with rock tombs above the river, boats gliding through the reeds and İztuzu beach. The ancient city of Kaunos and the mud baths can be combined with a boat trip.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in most of these places is limited, so choosing two or three bases is the most practical approach. In the east, Çıralı works for Olympos and Adrasan; in the middle, Kaş suits Kaleköy, Kekova and Patara; in the west, Fethiye is ideal for Kayaköy, Kabak, Faralya and Saklıkent. Hotels such as Blanca Beach Hotel in Kaş or The White House Kalkan are well placed for a quiet evening after a day of exploring.

When to Go and Getting There

May, June, September and October are the best months for both swimming and walking; July and August bring more heat and more visitors. Çıralı, Olympos and Adrasan in the east are easiest from Antalya Airport, while Kaş, Fethiye and Dalyan are closer to Dalaman Airport. The coast road is narrow and winding, so if you hire a car, keep daily distances short.

Keeping the Hidden Gems Hidden

These places are beautiful because they have escaped crowds and development. Take your rubbish home, avoid lights on turtle nesting beaches at night and follow the signs at protected archaeological sites. Staying in local guesthouses and eating in village restaurants also helps these communities thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are these hidden gems?

Most of the places in this guide are on the Lycian coast between Antalya and Fethiye: Kaleköy, Adrasan, Olympos, Çıralı, Kabak, Faralya, Patara, Kayaköy, Saklıkent and Dalyan.

Can I see them all in one holiday?

In a week you can cover them by choosing two or three bases, such as Çıralı, Kaş and Fethiye. Staying at least two nights in each keeps travel tiredness down.

Do I need a hire car?

A car makes it much easier to move between coves. Without one, boat trips and minibuses from Kaş and Fethiye are a good alternative.

When do the hidden coves get busy?

In July and August these places get busier too. May, June, September and October are calmer and better for walking.

Can I swim over the sunken city at Kekova?

The sunken city is a protected area and swimming directly over it is not allowed; you can see the ruins from a boat or a kayak.

Where should I stay?

Kaş, Kalkan, Fethiye, Çıralı and Dalyan are all good bases, with day trips to the hidden coves from their hotels.
