I was glad to have the facility to make a cup of tea or coffee, allthough there was no mini-bar - but the staff did bring me a glass of wine when asked

From the moment I arrived, Daniel and Younes welcomed me with genuine warmth and professionalism. They provided all the essential information I needed, including breakfast options and the late check‑out policy, and immediately made me feel at ease. When I reached my room, I discovered that the special room‑setting request I had made during booking had not been passed on, and the housekeeping team had already finished for the day. Despite this, Daniel and Younes went above and beyond to resolve the situation. They were determined to ensure my comfort and quickly found an alternative room that met my requirements perfectly. Their commitment to guest satisfaction was truly impressive. The night staff were also wonderfully accommodating, providing the extra bedding I needed for added comfort. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay. My sincere thanks to both the day and night teams—especially Daniel and Younes—for their warm hospitality and exceptional service.

About This Hotel

Set on The High Street opposite Magdalen College, the Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel is a landmark that blends centuries of history with contemporary comfort. Housed in a 17th century coaching inn, the property places you in the heart of Oxford’s famed university city, where cobbled lanes, historic architecture and scholarly atmosphere create a timeless backdrop for your stay. The building itself nods to the city’s rich past, while the guest rooms and public spaces are designed to feel welcoming and practical for modern travelers. The central location makes it easy to step out into Oxford’s character and daily life, with Magdalen College just across the street and Oxford High Street within easy reach for cafés, shops and cultural sights. Location and surroundings. From the moment you arrive you know this is a city centre property with a storied past. Being on The High Street and directly opposite a renowned college connects guests to Oxford’s academic heritage and its vibrant present. The surrounding area is a hub of activity, offering convenient access to university landmarks, local eateries and a range of cultural experiences. The hotel’s walkable setting makes it an excellent base for exploring on foot, whether you are here for a short break, a family visit or a literary themed escape inspired by writers historically associated with this city. Beach and pool experience. This is a city centre hotel and there are no on site beaches or swimming pools listed. Instead, the focus is on location, rooms and on site dining that complement a city break or cultural itinerary. Guests who value easy access to museums, libraries and parks will find the surrounding Oxford scene particularly engaging, with water recreation opportunities found nearby in the wider Oxford area rather than at the property itself. Rooms and comfort. The Mercure Oxford Eastgate offers 63 rooms that balance historic charm with modern practicality. The coaching inn roots are evident in architectural detail, while the rooms are designed for comfort and convenience. Many photos highlight well appointed sleeping areas with generous beds, and some rooms feature balcony or terrace options that add a touch of private outdoor space. While specific renovation details are not itemized, the overall impression is one of careful upkeep that preserves old world character while ensuring contemporary usability for a restful retreat after a day of sightseeing. Food and beverage options. Dining is visible across the hotel’s gallery, with spaces categorized as restaurant or places to eat. Breakfast is offered, including a continental option that provides a straightforward start to the day. The lobby and lounge areas invite guests to unwind with a drink or a light bite, and a wealth of nearby city eateries makes it easy to enjoy a relaxed meal either on site or just steps from the hotel. Family friendliness and activities. The property welcomes families, with a policy that children of any age are allowed. Cots and extra beds are available on request, subject to availability, and one child may stay free when using cots or existing beds in certain scenarios. The maximum occupancy is two guests, so this is a boutique style base best suited to couples or small families. Free WiFi is available across all areas, helping families plan day trips, check schedules and share memories. Check-in starts at 2 pm and check-out is by 12 pm, making planning straightforward for day trips and late arrivals. Relaxation, wellness and entertainment. Relaxation comes from comfortable lounges and bar spaces, as suggested by the lobby and social areas. There is no explicit spa or dedicated wellness facility listed, but the inviting public spaces and on site dining provide social settings for informal evenings and downtime after a day of exploring Oxford’s colleges, libraries and museums. The hotel’s atmosphere emphasizes easy, relaxed, authentic city living rather than resort style pampering. Who this hotel is ideal for. This property is ideal for travelers who want to be immersed in Oxford’s historic core. It appeals to couples and small families who value a central location, direct proximity to Magdalen College and quick access to the city’s cultural landmarks. The 63 rooms offer a practical base for exploring by foot, while on site dining and breakfast options add convenience to busy itineraries. Guests who value a traditional yet contemporary hotel experience, reliable WiFi and flexible policies for families will find this Mercure well suited to a short break, a university visit or a literary inspired getaway in one of England’s most storied university cities.
