Stonehenge is the most famous prehistoric monument in Britain and one of the easiest day trips you can make from the capital. This Stonehenge tour from London takes you from the city centre to the stones by air-conditioned coach, with no detours on the way, so most of your day is spent at the monument rather than on side stops. Your entry ticket is included, which means no queueing for tickets when you arrive.

What you will see at Stonehenge

The great stones rise from Salisbury Plain and have stood there for around 5,000 years; some weigh as much as 40 tonnes. Nobody knows for certain why they were raised: a temple, an astronomical calendar or a Bronze Age burial ground. At this World Heritage Site you can walk around the stone circle and photograph it from every angle.

A tour without a guide

This is an unescorted tour: the driver takes you there and back, but no guide comes with you on the coach or at the stones. To get the most out of your visit, download the official Stonehenge audio guide app to your phone before you set off. Show your Golden Tours wristband at Stonehenge and you get 25% off the souvenir guidebook.

Departure times and meeting points

The morning tour runs every day except Christmas Day. Meet at 08:15 at Golden Tours Stop 8 on Buckingham Palace Road; the coach leaves at 08:30 sharp and returns to Victoria or Gloucester Road (Kensington) at around 14:30, depending on traffic. From April to September there is also an afternoon departure: meet at 12:45 at Golden Tours Bus Stop 1 on Bulleid Way, leave at 13:00 and be back at around 19:30.

Tips before you go

Salisbury Plain is open and often windy, so bring a jacket even in summer. Gratuities and extra food and drink are not included.
