Which Village to Stay In
- Göreme: the region’s centre, with the Open-Air Museum and valleys within walking distance; the most practical base for balloon flights.
- Uçhisar: calmer, romantic cave hotels with panoramic views below the castle.
- Ürgüp: a lively town centre, stone-mansion hotels and wine houses.
We explain the villages, room types and what to check in a cave room in Cappadocia Cave Hotels: Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp Compared.
When to Go
April to June and September to November are the best periods for walking and balloon flights. In winter the valleys are covered in snow and cave rooms with fireplaces offer a different experience, though balloon flights are cancelled more often. Plan at least two or three nights for a balloon flight.
Getting There
Nevşehir Kapadokya and Kayseri are the nearest airports. For a private transfer to your hotel, see Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport to Cappadocia transfer and Kayseri Airport to Cappadocia transfer. Dolmuş minibuses link the villages, and hiring a car makes exploring the valleys easy.
Things to Do in Cappadocia
The Göreme Open-Air Museum, a sunrise balloon flight, the Paşabağ and Devrent valleys, the underground cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, pottery workshops in Avanos and a walk through Ihlara Valley are the classics.
Practical Tips
- Take plenty of water and a hat when walking the valleys; trails have little shade.
- For hillside hotels, ask about luggage help or a transfer.
- The underground cities have narrow, low passages; bear this in mind if you dislike enclosed spaces.
