The Park’s Best-Known Valleys
- The Red and Rose valleys (Kızılçukur and Güllüdere): rocks that glow red at sunset and rock churches; the most popular walks.
- Pigeon Valley: a path between Göreme and Uçhisar, famous for its rock-cut dovecotes.
- Zemi and Kılıçlar valleys: quieter, shorter walks in nature.
- Göreme Open-Air Museum: the park’s most visited site, with frescoed rock churches.
Where to Stay
Accommodation inside the park is concentrated in Göreme: cave hotels with rock-cut rooms, boutique hotels in stone houses and guest houses. For a more panoramic stay Uçhisar, and for town life Ürgüp, are both a short distance away. We compare the villages in Cappadocia Cave Hotels: Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp Compared.
When to Go
Spring and autumn are best for walking; at midday in summer the valleys get very hot. Balloon flights run year-round depending on the weather and are cancelled more often in winter.
Getting There
Nevşehir Kapadokya and Kayseri are the nearest airports. For a private transfer to your hotel, see Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport to Goreme Historical National Park transfer. Most valleys can be reached on foot from Göreme.
Visiting the Park Responsibly
- Stay on marked paths; the soft tuff rock erodes easily.
- Do not touch the frescoes in the rock churches or use flash photography.
- Carry plenty of water and a hat, and take your rubbish home.
